Are we not kittens?

Six kittens, six pictures! (FYI, all of these kittens are reserved) We will have them named and the genders identified for the next post, but in the meantime…

It’s the Irish Litter!

Patootie and Talisker are the proud parents of six kittens born a few days before St. Patrick’s Day… so we’ll think up some good Irish names for them.  There for four boys and two girls, five of which are already reserved. After an exciting (Caesarean section) delivery, Patootie and the kids are doing just fine.

We took the kittens out of the nest to take some pictures. Some of them seemed to enjoy it and some of them just wanted to get back to the nip.

A few days before delivery, Patootie looked like she was ready to pop. Rub the baby belleh!

Here is the Gang of Six! Just starting to open their eyes.

“I dunno, these two look suspicious to me.”

“I am the most interesting cat in the world.”

“I only look scared because I am!”

“And now I shall regale you with a witty monologue.”

“You woke me up for this?”

“What did I tell you about no pictures before coffee?”

“Shhh, I’m practicing for my audition to appear on The Voice!”

But wait, there’s more!

We found out for sure today that we have more kittens available! Back in January we fixed Talisker and Patootie together for a date but they didn’t seem to get along.  Toots didn’t seem interested but we left them together for the day in case she changed her mind.  We never did hear any of the telltale signs (i.e., wailing and gnashing of fangs) and she didn’t have a case of “wet neck” when I let her out. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, please go Google it — this isn’t Cat Sex Ed 101!).

Anyway, we noticed recently that Patootie was getting a little wide, so we got her X-rayed and sure enough there are 5 – 7 kittens in there, some of which are still available!

We’re expecting that the kittens will want to emerge late next week. Stay tuned!

More pictures of the Champagne litter

We tried to get some good pictures, really! The kittens and Nutmeg had other ideas.

For example, in the picture above that big blurry thing is Meg’s tail — but it’s the only picture with all four kittens even remotely standing still, so there it is!

One out of two kittens not moving… I’ll take that!

Pay no attention to the kitten behind the kitten.

The red kid, kind of in focus…

This picture would have been so good if the kitten in front stood still… but check out those paws!

Meet Rigel!

We have a new boy in our home, and his name is Rigel.  We will be showing him soon, and if all goes as planned he will be the father to many, many kittens.  Rigel is a stunning solid blue. Pictures do not do him justice. (Rigel, by the way, is a giant blue star in the constellation Orion… which is fitting, because we think that he’ll be a giant blue boy…. and, of course, a star!)

Rigel came from our friends at the Hollis Hill Maine Coon Cattery. He is amazingly cuddly, loves being near people, and purrs almost constantly when he’s next to you…traits we hope he’ll pass on to his offspring (along with his good looks!)

Pudgy lumps of kitten-ness

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald

We let the Nutmeg-Talisker litter out of the nest today to take some pictures.  Since they were born on January 1st we decided to name them after champagnes.  Technically we should have named them after hangover symptoms, but Dry Heaves, Pounding Headache, Nausea, and Cotton Tongue just aren’t good kitten names.  Well, maybe Cotton Tongue, but definitely not the others.

Safe and warm

Today we took some of the cats for their annual cardiac ultrasound this morning (just something we do as breeders to ensure healthy lines).  Dunkin was sufficiently traumatized by the experience that she needed to find a safe place to snuggle up this afternoon.

It’s not all that horrible a process, but between the car ride, the cold table, a bit of a belly shave, the cold gel, and being probed it’s understandable that the cats would be a little wigged out.  Still, they were true to their Maine Coon nature and were very cooperative, considering.

Happy New Kittens!

Well, this was an interesting way to spend New Years Day.  Nutmeg began giving birth this morning and squirted out four cuties in rapid succession (we don’t call her “Machine Gun Megs” for nothing).  Then she started to have trouble with Number Five.   Try as she might, it wouldn’t come out.  We ended up taking her to the animal hospital where she had to have Caesarean section.  The kittens are supposed to come out feet first (fronts or backs) but Number Five scrunched his arms against his sides and wasn’t going anywhere.  He didn’t survive, nor did Number Six behind him (since Five was blocking the way).  It happens, but it sucks.

After an exhausting day Nutmeg and the kittens are home and  doing well.  The kittens are especially appreciating the easy nipple access from Meg’s shaved belly.  Meg is very protective of the kittens, as usual, but we lured her away long enough to get a picture of the kitten cluster.

Count the kittens!

Normally when our vet x-rays an expectant mother she can give us a definitive count of how many kittens to expect.  But things are so crowded inside Nutmeg that all she’ll commit to is “five to seven.”  Looking at this, I can’t say I blame her.

As usual, the dark stuff is just poop.
