The Intern

Nothing to report on the kitten front yet. Watch this space.

Max performs a quality check on my coffee.  So helpful!

During this time of social distancing and telework, Max has turned out to be a pretty good home office cat (or, as we call him, the Intern). Despite some initial attempts to murder his nemesis, the headset wire, he mostly does the Maine Coon thing and hangs out nearby and looks regal.

We did catch him once on the computer looking for naked cat videos on the Internet, but luckily he can’t type well so he just ended up googling NKDCTVDOS.

Ah, Sweet Meowstery of Life, At Last I’ve Found Thee

“There are girls on the other side of that door, I know it!”

Max and Buster are eager to have some romantic interludes with the ladies, but it’s not quite Spring and their girlfriends haven’t gone into heat yet. Max is trying hard by occasionally performing a romantic serenade, but the objects of his affection remain unmoved. This is mostly because his serenades likely consist of gems like, “Wanna Mate? Wanna Mate? Wanna Mate?” and “I Like Scrod. You Like Scrod. Let’s Get It On.”

What can  we say? He’s a lover, not a lyricist.

Anyway, the moment we have a confirmed pregnancy we’ll post something there.

The quiet months

The last of Pixel’s kittens is going to her new home today, so we will be kittenless until Spring. As the days get longer the girls will go into heat and we’ll set them up on dates with the boys. (Pixel is already in heat but it is too soon after her litter for her to get pregnant again). If things go well we’ll have our first litter of the year between April and June.

Please keep an eye on this website and our Facebook page for updates on kittens. We appreciate your interest, seriously, but if you call or e-mail asking about when we’ll have kittens we can’t tell you anything different than what is posted here. (If you have other questions, please feel free to e-mail us).

Stranger in a Strange Land of Kittens

Pixel’s kittens are growing into chubby little things! They are very curious, active, and (most importantly) have mastered the litter box. Every time we go into their room a tiny kitten stampede runs up to greet us.

Pixel is named after the cat in Robert A. Heinlien’s novel, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls. Because of that we decided to name this litter after characters in some of his other books. Here they are!

All of these kittens are reserved.

Margrethe (girl)

Mycroft (boy)

Minerva (girl)

Lazarus (boy)

Estrellita (girl)

Dora (girl)

At the Vet

Starry Night’s kittens made their first trip out of the house for their 8-week wellness check with the vet. All of them checked out fine, They also turned out to be surprisingly good travelers. They were very quiet in the car and they didn’t have any accidents.

When we got to the vet we took a look inside the carrier and they were so cute and chill that we had to take a picture.

What’s happening?

Pixel moves her kittens

Pixel moved her kittens out of nest, so it was a good opportunity to update the pictures of her kittens!  Their eyes are open and the six of them are doing well (the seventh kitten faded and passed away a few days after birth, unfortunately).

While there is nothing routine about a litter of kittens, we are able to predict certain things the mother and kittens will do. Long before Pixel moved her babies we placed fleece in corners and other places where she might decided to move her kittens.  Our planning paid off and the winner was “corner underneath the vintage radio cabinet.”

Awwwwww!

Wakey wakey!

Sleepy!

Very sleepy!

The usual kitten bundle!

Starry Night’s kittens make a good impression

Starry Night’s kittens are getting big and are very, very cute (though we may be a bit biased). Since Starry Night is named after a post-Impressionist painting, we thought that this litter could be named after post-Impressionist artists. After a little googling we had some names!

Suzanne Valadon (girl)

Pablo Picasso (boy)

Paul Gauguin (boy)

Edvard Munch (boy)

Emily Carr (girl)

Meanwhile…

The last of Lola’s kittens went to their forever home today so the main living area of our house feels a little quiet. That will change this week when Queen Sara Saturday’s kittens get their first vaccinations and can emerge from their private room to join the rest of the cattery.

In the meantime, they decided to spontaneously pose just perfectly for a picture on their cat tree. Usually when kittens do something like this I’ll run for my phone and they will have moved on when I get back. This time they just waited patiently for me, and this is the result.

All of these kittens are reserved.

Pixel makes it look easy

Pixel gave birth to seven lovely kittens last night over the course of three hours. She was a little stressed out but knew exactly what to do and pumped out a kittens at a mostly regular pace. They were popping out every 15-30 minutes. The 6th took about 50 minutes, just long enough for us to get a little worried before we saw the head. (That isn’t actually an especially long time, but when she sets a precedent with the first five you get expectations).

The kittens are all doing fine this morning . Pixel gets very anxious when we take the kittens out for weighing, so we are trying our best not to disturb her. She started to go into labor under the bed before we moved her to the nest and we don’t want her to move the babies.

Even after all this time we’re still learning new tricks.  We always drape a fleece over the nest but this time we let it drape most of the way over the opening in the hopes that she’ll consider it a more secure location than under the bed.

Update: A few days after Pixel gave birth one of the kittens started declining and passed away. All of the others are doing well and are very chunky.

Fertile Turtle

Pixel went to the vet for her X-ray today and she’s going to have seven kittens. She’s a fertile turtle! (Turtles… there’s a theme).

Maximus, the father, was very pleased with his part in this accomplishment and looks forward to the next time. At least, I think so. I was throwing a toy and he was fetching it so it was hard to tell.
