Ashley is due to give birth to six kittens this week! It could be seven (it depends on if you are counting skulls or spines), but we are sure about seeing at least six on the X-ray:

Update: Everyone who has looked at this since we posted it says “seven.” Of these, five are reserved!

The NPR litter is growing fast and enjoying the additional space in the main part of the house. After meals they like to burn off that excess energy by running back and forth as fast as they can. Then they nap… until they wake up and start playing again. And eat some more. It’s a kitten’s life.
One girl (Sylvia) is available in this litter.

Pippi gave birth to seven lovely kittens a couple of days earlier than expected! Four red kittens and three dark ones, all nursing well. More details on the patterns and genders once Pippi lets us get a better look at them.

Pippi’s kittens are due in another week, so we got the usual X-ray done so we know what to expect. It looks like there are seven kittens in there! We guessed that it might be a big litter because she is waddling around the house looking like she swallowed a basketball. Maybe we’ll name the kittens Wilson, Spalding, Rawlings… I can’t think of seven basketball makers, so maybe not!

Seven!

Get these things out of me!

We keep the radio tuned to NPR pretty much all day, so one day I suggested that having well-informed kittens would be a point in our favor when it comes to choosing a cattery. Alas, Marie doesn’t think knowledge of world affairs that is something people are really looking for in a kitten. I’m not so sure. They always seem to perk up when Marketplace comes on. Sure, that is also around dinner time and could be the sound of a can opening, but it could also be the dulcet tones of Kai Ryssdal, right?
In any case, this discussion led to “Things you hear on NPR” becoming the naming theme for this litter. Without further delay, may we present them to you in all their cuteness!
(Oh, all kittens in this litter are reserved).

As many of you know, Marie is the brains of the cattery and does all of the heavy lifting when it comes to breeding, genetics, nutrition and such. Well, on top of this she just passed the rigorous PawPeds Paw Academy G2 breeder course! She passed the G1 course last year. Few breeders in the US have taken these courses, and even with ten years of experience Marie still found plenty to learn. It was definitely worth the time and effort.

Georgette’s kittens continue to grow and (of course) look cute. Their eyes are just opening but you wouldn’t always know it for all the sleeping they do. Eat. Sleep. It’s a kitten’s life.

Looks kind of like an Escher drawing, no?

Well, hello.

Eating makes me so tired…

Wake me when Mom is ready feed me again, okay?

Look what I can do with my tongue!

Okay, yawn in 5.. 4… 3… 2… 1…

YAWN!

Duke
Duke passed away last night. He was nine weeks old. We’ll know more about the cause of death when the results come back from the lab in a week or so.
We’ve lost kittens during birthing or shortly thereafter, but this is the first time in ten years of breeding that we’ve lost a kitten at this age. We know that statistically this sort of thing is bound to happen eventually, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less.
Goodbye, Duke. You were a sweet boy and we miss you already.
